What Is Paint Correction?

If your paint looks dull or covered in spiderweb swirls in the sun, paint correction is how that gloss comes back.

Where Swirl Marks Come From

Swirl marks are thousands of tiny scratches in the clear coat. They come from automatic car washes, dirty wash mitts and towels, and years of normal use. Each one scatters light, so the paint looks hazy instead of glossy, even when it is clean.

How Paint Correction Works

Paint correction levels the clear coat with a machine polisher, removing a few microns at a time until the surface is flat again and light reflects straight back. That is where the depth and gloss come from. A micron is one thousandth of a millimeter, so it is careful, measured work.

  • Wash and decontaminate: foam bath, hand wash, iron remover and clay bar
  • Measure and inspect: paint thickness is measured and defects are mapped under lights
  • Compound and polish: defects are removed, then the finish is refined to a high gloss
  • Inspect and protect: the paint is checked again and protected, usually with ceramic coating

What It Can And Cannot Fix

Correction removes swirls, haze, water spot etching, light scratches and dull oxidation. Scratches that go through the clear coat cannot be polished out safely. Once swirls are removed they are gone for good, but new ones can appear if the car goes back to brush washes, which is why we usually recommend protecting corrected paint with a ceramic coating.

Is It Worth It?

For a car you plan to keep, or one you are about to sell, correction is one of the biggest visual upgrades you can make. A corrected car looks better than the day it left the dealer and is worth more when it is time to sell.
