Fashion Color PPF Vs Vinyl Wrap: What Is The Difference?
By The Golden State Auto Salon Team · October 21, 2026
Vinyl wrap changes the color and that is about it. Fashion Color PPF changes the color and protects the paint.
The Material Is Different
A traditional vinyl wrap is thin film, about 3 mil. Fashion Color PPF is about 8 mil of the same self healing urethane used in clear paint protection film, roughly 5x stronger than traditional vinyl.
Side By Side
- Rock chips: color PPF absorbs chips and road debris, vinyl offers little protection
- Scratches: color PPF self heals with heat or sun, scratches in vinyl are permanent
- Lifespan: color PPF carries a 10 year warranty on most films, vinyl lasts a few years
- Removal: color PPF peels clean with the factory paint protected underneath, vinyl can leave glue or lift paint
When Vinyl Still Makes Sense
If you only want a new color for a short time and protection does not matter to you, vinyl can be the lower cost option. If you are keeping the car, driving it daily or care about the paint underneath, color PPF is the better long term choice.
