PPF Vs Ceramic Coating: Which One Does Your Car Need?
By The Golden State Auto Salon Team · June 9, 2026
They both protect your paint, but they solve different problems. Here is the short version from the shop that installs both every day.
The Short Answer
Paint protection film (PPF) is a physical layer of urethane film that takes the hits so your paint does not. Ceramic coating is a hard, glossy layer bonded to the clear coat that keeps the paint slick, shiny and easy to wash. PPF protects against damage. Ceramic coating protects against dirt, water spots and the slow fade that comes with time.
What PPF Does Best
- Absorbs rock chips and road debris on the front of the car
- Self heals light scratches and swirls with heat or sun
- Stays clear and invisible, with edges wrapped so there is nothing to see
- Backed by a 10 year warranty on the LLumar Platinum film we install
If you drive the freeway every day, park on the street, or just bought something you plan to keep, PPF on the front end is the single best thing you can do for the paint. A full front end covers the hood, bumper, fenders, headlights and mirror caps, which is where almost every chip happens.
What Ceramic Coating Does Best
- Deep, wet looking gloss that lasts 5 to 7 years
- Water and dirt slide off, so washes take half the time
- Resists bird droppings, bug guts and water spots
- No more waxing
Ceramic coating does not stop rock chips. It is a few microns thick, not a few mils. What it does is make every day of ownership easier, and it keeps the car looking freshly detailed for years.
Why Most Owners End Up With Both
The most popular setup we install is PPF on the front end and ceramic coating over the rest of the car, and often over the film too. The film takes the chips where the car gets hit, and the coating keeps everything easy to clean and glossy. If you only pick one, choose PPF for a new car you plan to keep a long time, and ceramic coating if your main goal is shine and easy washing.
