Is Paint Protection Film Worth It?

For some cars it is the best money you will spend. For others it is overkill. Here is how we think about it at the shop.

What You Are Paying For

PPF is a clear, flexible film installed over your paint, panel by panel, with the edges wrapped so it disappears. It absorbs rock chips, sand, road debris and light scratches that would otherwise go straight into your clear coat. The top layer self heals, so light swirls and marks fade with heat or sun.

When It Is Worth It

  • You just bought the car new or nearly new and want to keep the factory paint
  • You drive the freeway a lot, where most rock chips happen
  • The car has expensive or hard to match paint
  • You plan to keep the car for years, or care about resale value

When It May Not Be

If the car already has a lot of chips and you are not planning to fix them, or you plan to sell it soon, film may not pay for itself. In that case a paint correction and ceramic coating can make the car look great for far less.

How Much Coverage Do You Need?

  • Full Front End: full hood, bumper, fenders, headlights and mirror caps. Covers where almost every chip happens.
  • Track Package: full front end plus the A-pillars and rocker panels, for cars that see canyons, track days and real miles.
  • Full Body: every original color painted surface, for complete peace of mind.

For most daily drivers, the full front end is the sweet spot. You can also go further with stealth matte film, which turns gloss paint satin, or Fashion Color PPF, which changes the color while still protecting the paint.
