Does Ceramic Coating Prevent Scratches?

This is the most common misunderstanding we hear at the counter, so here is the honest answer.
The Honest Answer
No. A ceramic coating will not stop rock chips, key scratches or door dings. It is a very hard but very thin layer, measured in microns, bonded to your clear coat. Anything with real force goes right through it. If someone promises a coating that makes your car scratch proof, be skeptical.
What It Does Protect Against
- Bird droppings, bug guts and tree sap etching into the paint
- Water spots and mineral buildup
- UV fading and oxidation over time
- Dirt and grime bonding to the surface, so washes are faster and safer
Because dirt slides off a coated car so easily, you touch the paint less when washing it. Fewer wash induced swirls is one of the biggest real world benefits.
If You Want Scratch And Chip Protection
That is what paint protection film is for. PPF is a thick urethane film that absorbs rock chips and self heals light scratches with heat or sun. Many owners put PPF on the front of the car where chips happen, then ceramic coat the whole car, film included, for gloss and easy washing.
